Project / product name: Heartstart

Team leader: Paul Misterka
Challenge: 4. Summon Help Now
Problem: Every day hundreds of people in Czechia experience heart attacks, and unless they are resuscitated by proper CPR and/or defibrillator (AED) use, they are very likely to die. Unfortunately, in >85% of the cases, the help arrives too late. The majority of the time, the first responder is either too late, does CPR improperly, or doesn't have access to an AED.
Solution: To drastically improve heart attack survival rates, we propose Heartstarter, a simple and intuitive mobile application that notifies nearby rescuers about heart-related emergencies. Whenever someone experiences a heart attack, a passerby can call 112, and the emergency responder can easily trigger an emergency event with Heartstarter. People experienced with CPR will automatically be notified about the emergency and the location of nearby AEDs. The rescuers can collaborate on picking up AEDs.
Impact: As the app notifies experienced rescuers, CPR is much more likely to be done correctly. By slashing the time to CPR from 8-10 minutes in cities and 15-20 minutes in rural areas to less than 3 minutes, Heartstarter can easily triple heart attack survival rates, saving lives daily. Moreover, the long-term cost of care per patient is cut in half thanks to the reduced complication severity in rescued patients.
Feasibility & financials: As the system is entirely virtual, the only costs associated with Heartstarter are the maintenance and hosting expenses. Because Heartstarter easily integrates with existing emergency infrastructure, there is little overhead for emergency call centers. The project is feasible if its penetration is high (~5% of the population), which can be achieved with public institutions' help (exposure).
What is new about your solution?: Our solution is entirely new to the Czech market and 95% of Europe's population. We offer higher-precision tracking and collaborative rescuing through notifications than the few existing solutions. Our project can also be easily extended with real-time ambulance updates and live calls for rescuers.
What you have built at the hackathon - text explanation + code (e.g. GitHub link): A mobile Flutter app connected to Firebase on GCP with Google Cloud Functions on Typescript and a hospital-facing API for creating emergencies. The app saves people who are having heart attacks by bringing people with CPR certifications to reduce response time.
What you had before the hackathon, please mention open source as well: No prep, I guess experience
What comes next and what you wish to achieve: We want to polish existing features and expand the feature set with automatic heart attack detection, ambulance tracking, and additional tracking features. More importantly, it'd be great to launch Hartstart within Czechia. We'd also love to expand this idea to help save people in other countries with your help.
