Challenge: 5. Blackout Resilience: Survive the City Without Power
Problem: Almost 2/3 of EU citizens say that they need more information to prepare for disasters and emergencies. Moreover, more than 1/3 of citizens say they have difficulties to find relevant information from public authorities and emergency services. Current tools are fragmented, do not adapt to the user needs, don’t encourage learning and fail to provide a sense of feeling ready for disasters.
Solution: SafeZone EU - Pan-European Emergency Information Service, that is a mobile app + physical toolkit that empowers people to survive during emergencies. It combines offline emergency info, interactive guides, gamified learning, and peer-to-peer communication. It works without power or network and mirrors its features physically (maps, kits, games), ensuring all citizens - including offline or vulnerable - stay safe and informed.
Impact: Our solution improves public safety, builds long-term resilience, and fosters a culture of preparedness. It reduces panic, misinformation, and strain on emergency services by guiding people to safe actions and resources. With every deployment, we create resilient communities prepared to self-organize and support each other. Our solution is scalable across EU cities, saving lives, speeding up recovery and increasing the feeling of safeness.
Feasibility & financials: We believe that our idea is very feasible. SafeZone EU is low-tech but high-impact: we use proven tech (offline-first app, printed materials) and we’ll launch with municipal and NGO partners. Our team consists of a Software Engineer, UX Designer, and a Marketing Specialist, with experience working on commercial and government funded applications. Our plan is to receive EU funding to allow us to work on this project full-time. It’s scalable, localizable, and API-ready to plug into city apps.
What is new about your solution?: SafeZone EU is holistic: it educates, guides, navigates, and connects communities. During our desk research, we found a lack of trusted sources of emergency help information. While some solutions exist, we provide a process innovation, merging them together and easily expanding to new markets - making people prepared for emergencies, who otherwise wouldn’t.
What you have built at the hackathon - text explanation + code (e.g. GitHub link): We built mockups and basic design system that allow us to pitch the idea, all based on extended research and mentor support.
What you had before the hackathon, please mention open source as well: An organized group and totally different idea.
What comes next and what you wish to achieve: Our next step in applying for pre-seed EU funding from Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP) as part of the “Platformy startowe dla nowych pomysłów” program.
During this process, we will also work on a full information architecture based on further research. We need to build a complex and easy to understand graphical system, which main goal is to be easy to understand for everyone. A lot of work ahead.
