Challenge: 5. Blackout Resilience: Survive the City Without Power
Problem: Imagine there is blackout. No mobile service, no internet, no electricity.
Solution: Some of the most used apps using our public SDK turn into blackout mode to form a meshed network. Pre-coordinated beacons go to pre-defined locations to form the first loose network. Others can join these gathering points and send messages to peers, get medical help or receive official governmental information.
Impact: The biggest problem in the first few hours of a blackout is misinformation. We help to spread what happened officially, share information on where to get help fast. With millions of users affected by blackouts and a majority using phones, information can spread. Especially when it comes to emergency calls, about 300 are taken each day in Prague with a survival rate drop for cardiac arrests of 7-10% per minute - image if you can't make that call.
Feasibility & financials: A UI and Design is provided by us. Existing apps were tested and showed a functioning product in work. The SDK should be open source for other app providers to integrate and must be funded by the city as part of the emergency protocol.
What is new about your solution?: Using private keys, we can ensure that messages come from certified senders, thereby reducing rumors and uncertainties. A public SDK mitigates the problem that the meshed network only works with many users connected. Flags on the map also allow the spread of more information (water, energy, medic) and the beacon program ensures a first coverage before users must join.
What you have built at the hackathon - text explanation + code (e.g. GitHub link): We built a UI with three different tabs: notification, maps and chat. The map shows the position of the user and potential beacons nearby that you can connect to. Notifications are messages that you cannot respond to that share information from the government. The chat are groups or single people that you can chat with - which can be certified as well.
What you had before the hackathon, please mention open source as well: Nothing. We are coders and wanted to take on a new challenge in focusing on Design, Storytelling and a Business Concept.
What comes next and what you wish to achieve: We would like to go further into the development of the public SDK and include further features such as payment or commenting coordination in times of disaster.
