Project / product name: CKG Prevention Tool
Link to the project: https://alignhealth.vercel.app/
Team leader: Alejandro Javier Perez Andres
Challenge: 6. Are you kidneying?
Problem: Once diagnosed, CKD is irreversable. Despite affecting about 10% of the population, and being on the rise especially in the western world due to its risk factors of e.g. age, hypertension and diabetes, it remains mainly in the shadow of attention. The current lack of preventive care and education pressures the health systems significantly and without any solution will even increase to do so.
Solution: Big-data analysis of patient data from a vast variety of measurements can help us to identify firstly more risk factors and allow us also to better distinguish it from diseases with similar symptoms such as hypertension. Secondly, patients can be identified early on as risk patients and taken into preventive care. This will reduce costs on healthcare systems significantly. Finally, transplantations for CKD patients can be planned early and increase survival chances massively.
Impact: Chronic Kidney Disease, CKD, is affecting 1 in 10 people worldwide. It is diagnosed late by doctors as the patient usually has no subjective problems (symptoms) at first. Finding new Preventation, Detection and Treatment options will reduce morbidity, mortality and significantly reduce pressure on healthcare systems.
Feasibility & financials: The project is scalable due to the use of a web platform, and due to low costs of expanding the data gathering. Very low fixed costs, as it does not involve changing of systems for anybody involved. The patient data can be analyzed in bulk and a risk factor will be assigned to each patient. As doctors use it to identify risk patients, they can also collaborate to improve the model by supplying data freely.
What is new about your solution?: The focus on preventive care is new, which was so far not done - or only based on human intuition. The novel usage of data science is a crucial ingredient. Furthermore a web app which brings the solution to doctors and patients, increases education of all participants and facilitates the prevention management.
What you have built at the hackathon - text explanation + code (e.g. GitHub link): A data analysis based on python. We cleaned the data set provided and correlated the patients status (sick, healthy) to the variety of measures.
What you had before the hackathon, please mention open source as well: IKEM Data set with raw data. Background information of CKD.
What comes next and what you wish to achieve: We would like to win this hackathon, we would like to improve our algorithm on real data and in the end create a platform to help the patients and doctors.
